A practical 4-day itinerary covering My Khe Beach, Marble Mountains, Son Tra Peninsula, My Son Sanctuary, and Hoi An Ancient Town.
This itinerary is designed for travelers who:
- Are visiting Da Nang for the first time
- Have 4–5 days available
- Want to experience both Da Nang and Hoi An
When planning a trip to Central Vietnam, many travelers wonder:
- Should I visit both Da Nang and Hoi An?
- How many days do I need?
- Should I stay overnight in Hoi An?
- Are Marble Mountains and My Son Sanctuary worth visiting?
After visiting Da Nang and Hoi An myself, I found that staying in Da Nang and taking day trips to nearby attractions is the most efficient option for first-time visitors.
In this guide, I'll share the exact itinerary I followed and explain why it worked so well for a first trip to Central Vietnam.
Before diving into the daily schedule, watch the video below to get a feel for the destinations covered in this itinerary.
Why a 4-Day Itinerary Works Well
The Da Nang area offers a surprising variety of attractions, including:
- My Khe Beach
- Marble Mountains
- Son Tra Peninsula
- Dragon Bridge
- My Son Sanctuary
- Hoi An Ancient Town

At the same time, Central Vietnam can be hotter than many visitors expect, and travel times between attractions can add up.
While 2–3 days often feels rushed, four full days gives you enough time to experience the region's highlights without constantly moving from place to place.
Should You Stay in Da Nang or Hoi An?
If it's your first visit, I recommend staying in Da Nang.
Here's why:
- Closer to Da Nang International Airport
- Wider range of hotel options
- Direct access to beach resorts
- Easy Grab rides to Hoi An
- Convenient access to Marble Mountains and My Son Sanctuary
Hoi An is beautiful, but for a first trip, staying in Da Nang reduces hotel changes, minimizes luggage transfers, and lets you enjoy the beach while still exploring nearby attractions.
For this itinerary, I used a beachfront hotel in Da Nang as my base and explored the surrounding area through day trips.

Getting Around Da Nang and Hoi An
Grab was by far the most convenient transportation option during my trip.
The app is easy to use, air-conditioned cars are comfortable, and prices are generally very reasonable.
- My Khe Beach → Marble Mountains: about USD 3–4
- Da Nang ↔ My Son Sanctuary (round trip): about USD 35–40
- Da Nang → Hoi An Ancient Town: about USD 12–15
Guided tours are available, but I personally enjoyed the flexibility of traveling independently and moving at my own pace.
For longer trips such as My Son Sanctuary, it's useful to exchange WhatsApp contact information with your driver. This makes it easy to arrange pickup times after you've finished exploring. I recommend installing both Grab and WhatsApp before arriving in Vietnam.

Day 1|Arrival in Da Nang and an Evening Walk Around My Khe Beach
Key Points for Day 1
- Do not overpack the first day
- Enjoy the beach resort atmosphere
- Save your energy for the next few days
Afternoon
Arrive at Da Nang International Airport.
I exchanged some cash into Vietnamese dong at the airport. The numbers can feel surprisingly large at first, so it may take a little time to get used to the local currency.
For the transfer from the airport to the hotel, I booked a car in advance. Grab would probably have worked as well, but the pre-booked transfer was easy and reassuring. The driver sent a meeting point photo via WhatsApp before arrival, which made the airport pickup smooth.
After checking in, I did not try to pack in too much sightseeing on the first day. Instead, I took a slow walk around the beach area near the hotel.
On this trip, I stayed at TMS Hotel Da Nang Beach near My Khe Beach.

Evening
From the hotel, I walked down to My Khe Beach. Even after sunset, the heat of the day was still in the air, giving the evening a very tropical feel.
Just walking along the beachfront promenade gives you a good sense of Da Nang’s relaxed coastal atmosphere. Even after dark, many people were still playing in the sea and enjoying the beach.

Night
For dinner, I chose a seaside restaurant with a nice breeze. Although Vietnamese food would have been the obvious first choice, I started the trip with something familiar: a beer and a burger.
The meal cost 205,000 VND. Vietnam can be affordable, but restaurants in tourist areas may not feel extremely cheap, especially near the beach.

If your schedule matches the weekend, the Dragon Bridge show is also worth considering. The fire and water show is usually held on Saturday and Sunday nights.
Day 2|Marble Mountains and Son Tra Peninsula
Key Points for Day 2
- Experience both nature and culture around Da Nang
- Great day for photography
- Enjoy both mountain views and the coastline
Morning
Visit Marble Mountains in the morning.
This area has cave temples, viewpoints, and unique limestone formations. It is one of the easiest half-day trips from the My Khe Beach area.
I used Grab to get there. Marble Mountains is close to the beach area, so I booked separate Grab rides for the way there and back.

It gets very hot during the day, so visiting in the morning is recommended.
Some areas inside the caves can be slippery, so comfortable shoes with good grip are better than sandals.
Afternoon
In the afternoon, I focused on a scenic drive around Son Tra Peninsula. From there, you can see Da Nang’s coastline from a different angle.
- Linh Ung Pagoda
- Coastal roads
- Viewpoints over the sea and the city
These are all worth seeing, but it can be extremely hot whenever you step out of the car, so it is best not to overdo it.

I arranged a half-day private car, which made the route flexible. The driver took me around Son Tra Peninsula and dropped me near Dragon Bridge at the end. When I saw an interesting view, I could ask the driver to stop for photos. Communication was a mix of simple English and Google Translate.
Night
In the evening, walk around the Dragon Bridge area. On show nights, the area becomes lively with food stalls, crowds, and a festive atmosphere.
The Dragon Bridge show usually starts at 9:00 p.m. on weekends. If you want a good viewing spot, it is better to arrive around 8:00 p.m. or a little after. Some people watch from the nearby plaza, while others stand closer to the dragon on the bridge.

Day 3|My Son Sanctuary
Key Points for Day 3
- Explore a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Perfect for history and culture lovers
- Balance sightseeing with resort time
Morning
Head out to My Son Sanctuary.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site was once the religious and political center of the ancient Champa Kingdom. The ruins are often compared to other major archaeological sites in Southeast Asia, though My Son has its own unique atmosphere.
Because temperatures rise quickly during the day, visiting in the morning is highly recommended.

Afternoon
Return to Da Nang and spend the afternoon relaxing at the hotel pool or on the beach.
One of the biggest lessons from this trip was that a good Da Nang itinerary should include downtime. Instead of filling every hour with sightseeing, leaving space to enjoy the resort often makes the trip more enjoyable.

Day 4|Hoi An Ancient Town
Key Points for Day 4
- Experience the unique atmosphere of Hoi An
- Excellent photography opportunities
- Compact and easy to explore on foot
Morning
Take it easy in the morning and head to Hoi An around lunchtime using Grab.
Daytime
Spend the afternoon exploring Hoi An Ancient Town.
- Japanese Covered Bridge
- Phung Hung Ancient House
- Historic merchant houses
- Cafés and riverside streets
These are some of the highlights worth visiting.

Many of Hoi An's historic houses, museums, and assembly halls require an entrance ticket. Ticket booths are located throughout the old town. During my visit, the ticket cost 120,000 VND and allowed entry to up to five participating attractions within the validity period. Even with a full afternoon, I didn't manage to use all five entries.
Evening
As sunset approaches, the atmosphere changes completely. Lanterns begin to light up along the river, creating one of the most photogenic scenes in Vietnam.

Departure Day
Enjoy one final walk along My Khe Beach or relax at a café before heading to the airport.
Rather than squeezing in one last attraction, leaving a little breathing room on departure day helps end the trip on a relaxed note.

Looking back, this balance of beach time, cultural sites, scenic drives, and a day trip to Hoi An felt like the ideal introduction to Central Vietnam.
Travel Tips for Da Nang and Hoi An
Best Time to Visit
February to May is generally considered one of the best times to visit Central Vietnam.
I visited in May and did not experience any rain during my stay. However, temperatures were already quite high, so sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water are essential.
This period usually offers stable weather, making it easier to enjoy beaches, day trips, and outdoor sightseeing.
Getting Around
- Grab
- Private car services
- Hotel-arranged transportation
These are the most convenient transportation options around Da Nang and Hoi An.
For most travelers, Grab is the easiest and most cost-effective choice. The app is widely used, easy to understand, and available throughout the region.
Payment Methods
Many cafés and larger businesses accept credit cards, but smaller restaurants, local shops, and some attractions may still prefer cash.
It is a good idea to carry some Vietnamese dong with you, especially when visiting local markets or smaller establishments.
Should You Stay in Hoi An?
For a first trip, staying in Da Nang is usually the easiest option.
You can enjoy the beaches, access the airport easily, and still visit Hoi An as a day trip. Personally, I felt that staying overnight in Hoi An would be something to consider on a second visit, once you've already experienced the main highlights of the region.
Final Thoughts
If this is your first trip to Da Nang and Hoi An, I highly recommend a 4-day itinerary that includes:
- Da Nang beachside accommodation
- Marble Mountains
- Son Tra Peninsula
- My Son Sanctuary
- Hoi An Ancient Town
This combination offers a great balance of beaches, culture, history, scenic drives, and local food without feeling rushed.
The biggest lesson from my own trip was that leaving room to relax is just as important as visiting famous attractions. Trying to see everything often reduces the enjoyment of the journey.
After spending five days in the region, this felt like the most comfortable and rewarding itinerary for a first-time visitor.
Feel free to customize the schedule based on your own interests and travel style.
