Grab became one of the most important tools on this Da Nang and Hoi An trip. I used it for city rides, Marble Mountains, Son Tra Peninsula, My Son Sanctuary, hotel transfers between Da Nang and Hoi An, the return from Hoi An to Da Nang, and the final airport ride.
For this trip, I ended up using three different transport options:
- pre-booked transfer for the first airport arrival
- Grab for most city rides, Marble Mountains, Hoi An transfers, and the final airport ride
- a time-based chartered car for Son Tra Peninsula
Each option worked best in a different situation. Grab handled most of the trip smoothly, but I would not use it in exactly the same way for every ride.
This article explains where Grab was the easiest choice, where a pre-booked transfer felt calmer, and where a chartered car was more practical.
I did not use regular taxis on this trip, so this article focuses on how Grab, pre-booked transfers, and chartered cars worked in my actual itinerary.
Grab is a ride-hailing app widely used in Southeast Asia. It works in a similar way to Uber: you set your destination in the app, see an estimated fare, and book the ride. In Da Nang, it was useful not only for short city rides, but also for Marble Mountains, Hoi An, and My Son Sanctuary. Card payment is supported, so you can avoid most fare negotiation in English or Vietnamese. Tipping is not generally required, though the app does include a tipping option.
Prices in this article are May 2026 trip-time examples. Current fares and airport rules may change.
The video below includes several of the Grab and transfer moments from this trip.
Short Answer: Grab Works, But Use Judgment
Grab removed a lot of friction in Da Nang. You can set the destination in the app, see the approximate price, pay by card, and avoid negotiating every ride in Vietnamese.
- first arrival from the airport
- short city rides
- nearby sightseeing such as Marble Mountains
- multi-stop sightseeing around Son Tra Peninsula
- far side trips such as My Son Sanctuary
- hotel transfers between Da Nang and Hoi An
- final airport ride before departure
The type of uncertainty is different for each ride. The two situations that need the most care are first arrival and far side trips.

For First Arrival, I Was Glad I Booked a Transfer
For the first ride from Da Nang airport to the hotel, I used a pre-booked transfer instead of Grab. Grab probably would have worked, but for the first arrival, the booked transfer was the right decision.
After a flight, you still need to understand the airport, confirm your mobile connection, manage luggage, and find the pickup point. At the time of the trip, the booked transfer cost about $6.67 USD.
Even if Grab works in Da Nang, a pre-booked transfer can be worth it for first arrival because it removes extra decisions at the start of the trip.

City Rides and Marble Mountains Were Smooth by Grab
For city rides and Marble Mountains, Grab handled the movement smoothly. At the time of the trip, the ride from the beach-side hotel area to the riverside hotel area cost 68,640 VND. The ride to Marble Mountains cost 83,200 VND, and the ride back cost 110,240 VND.
Marble Mountains are close enough to Da Nang that I did not feel the same return-ride anxiety as I did for My Son. Still, even for a nearby place, it helps to know where you will call the car afterward, especially after walking in the heat.

For Son Tra Peninsula, a Chartered Car Was Easier
If you want to visit multiple places around Son Tra Peninsula or Da Nang in one outing, a time-based charter can be more convenient than booking separate Grab rides. I used a four-hour charter through Klook, which cost about $27.66 USD at the time of the trip. Negotiating a route with a driver through translation can work, but having the time frame decided in advance made the day easier.
If your priorities are sea views, local culture, or photography, tell the driver in advance. It makes it easier for them to suggest suitable stops.

My Son Required More Planning
My Son Sanctuary was the ride that required the most judgment. It is more than one hour from Da Nang, and the return ride matters. Grab was still useful, but it was not a ride I wanted to treat casually.
This time, I booked the round trip through Grab and discussed the pickup time with the driver using smartphone translation. At the time of the trip, the My Son round trip cost 967,200 VND.
For suburban or rural sites, the key question is not only whether Grab works, but whether you have planned the return before arriving.

Da Nang to Hoi An by Grab Was Practical
Grab also made the transfer between Da Nang and Hoi An simple. At the time of the trip, the ride from the riverside Da Nang hotel to the Hoi An hotel cost 339,040 VND. The ride from Hoi An back to the Da Nang beach hotel cost 330,720 VND.
For this type of ride, you may be moving between cities with luggage. Confirm the hotel name, drop-off point, and amount of luggage before booking.

Final Airport Ride by Grab EV
For the final ride to Da Nang International Airport, I used a Grab EV. The car was made by VinFast, a Vietnamese EV manufacturer. It was slightly cheaper than a regular Grab option at the time, and the ride felt quiet and comfortable. For travelers who are curious about how quickly Vietnam is changing, riding in a locally made EV was a small but interesting part of the trip.
At the time of the trip, the ride from TMS Hotel Da Nang Beach to Da Nang International Airport cost 109,200 VND.
The contrast worked well: booked transfer for first arrival, Grab for final departure. Early in the trip, reduce uncertainty. Later, use the flexibility.

Grab vs Pre-Booked Transfer: How I Would Use Them
- first airport arrival: pre-booked transfer is calmer
- city rides: Grab is enough
- Marble Mountains: Grab is easy
- Son Tra Peninsula sightseeing: a four-hour charter is convenient
- My Son Sanctuary: Grab can work, but plan the return
- Da Nang to Hoi An: Grab is practical
- final airport ride: Grab is fine once you know the city
How TravelPassport Fits
The hard part of using Grab is often not the app. It is the information around the ride: hotel names, airport terminals, pickup points, destinations, return meeting points, payment, luggage, and mobile signal. When those details are scattered across chats, maps, booking emails, and screenshots, you spend more time searching while moving.
Keeping the itinerary, hotels, transport notes, tickets, and PDFs together in a trip tool like TravelPassport can reduce the checks you need to make before calling Grab.

Final Verdict
If I returned to Da Nang tomorrow, I would still use Grab for most rides.
For short city rides, Marble Mountains, Hoi An transfers, and the final airport ride, Grab was practical and easy to use. The only situation where I would still prefer a pre-booked transfer is the first airport arrival, when I want to reduce uncertainty after a flight.
For places farther from the city, such as My Son Sanctuary, the key is not only whether Grab works, but whether the return ride is already planned.
