After staying there, my answer is that one night in Hoi An is worth it, but a longer stay is not necessary for many first-time visitors. The value is seeing both the lantern-filled evening and the quiet morning after.

At night, Hoi An fills with lanterns, boats, riverside crowds, restaurants, shops, and tourist energy. In the morning, the streets, yellow walls, flowers, alleys, and river are much quieter.
One night gives you both. Several nights are not automatically better because the daytime sun requires more planning and rest. For a first visit, one night felt like the right balance.

A day trip can show you Hoi An from late afternoon into the lantern-filled evening. It also creates pressure: after walking through the crowds, you still need to return to Da Nang.
You also miss the quiet morning, which was one of the best parts for me. At night, Hoi An can feel like a heavily touristed town. In the morning, the quieter streets make it easier to notice the town itself — its rhythm, colors, and small details.
Why One Night Worked

Hoi An Historic Hotel was near the edge of the Old Town, making it easy to rest at the hotel or pool during the hottest part of the day and return to the streets later.
I could walk out for the lanterns and riverfront in the evening, then return for a quiet walk the next morning. That kept Hoi An from feeling like just a crowded nighttime attraction.
The Cost of Moving Luggage and Taking Grab

Staying overnight means changing hotels and moving luggage.
During the trip, the Grab ride from the riverside Da Nang hotel to Hoi An cost 339,040 VND. The ride from Hoi An back to the Da Nang beach hotel cost 330,720 VND.
If you only want a quick look at the lanterns, the extra move may feel unnecessary. If you want both the evening and morning, the cost and effort are easier to justify.
Who Should Stay Overnight?
The value of staying overnight is not just the atmosphere. It comes down to whether the hotel move and transport cost feel worth it in exchange for that quieter morning. With that in mind, stay overnight if you:
- want to see the lanterns without rushing
- want a quiet morning walk
- want to avoid walking through the midday sun
- do not want Hoi An to feel rushed
- want photos or video at different times of day
A day trip may be enough if Da Nang's beach and hotel time are the priority, you want fewer hotel moves, or a short evening visit is all you need.

For first-time visitors staying in Da Nang, one night in Hoi An is worth considering. It gives you both the energy of the lantern evening and the calm of the next morning, which are difficult to combine on a day trip.
A longer stay is not necessary for everyone. Considering the midday heat, the extra hotel move, and the Grab cost, one night in Hoi An with the remaining nights in Da Nang felt like the best balance for a first trip.
