Experience the tranquility of a Zen garden and the mystique of a mythical dragon in Kyoto's winter wonderland.
Winter in Kyoto's Arashiyama district offers a unique, tranquil beauty. During my visit, I explored the historic Zen temple, Tenryu-ji. The light dusting of snow on the gardens and the powerful Cloud Dragon painting on the temple's ceiling created an unforgettable experience.

The Elegance of Tatami Rooms and Historical Artwork
Upon entering the main hall, I was greeted by meticulously arranged tatami mats, traditionally crafted from woven rush grass and soft rice straw, providing a tactile connection to Japanese culture and a calming atmosphere. exuding a sense of calm and order. The walls feature paintings of Daruma (Bodhidharma) and dragons, visually expressing Zen principles. The serene atmosphere of the room allows visitors to feel the deep spiritual history of this temple.

The Snow-Kissed Zen Garden
Tenryu-ji is renowned for its karesansui (dry landscape garden), a style deeply rooted in Zen philosophy, where the raked patterns symbolize water's flow and the impermanence of life. where patterns in the white sand symbolize the flow of water. During winter, the delicate layer of snow enhances the garden's minimalist beauty, offering a serene, otherworldly landscape.

The garden's focal point is the Sogen Pond Garden, a pond-centered stroll garden designed by the temple's founder, Musō Soseki. The snow-covered rocks and reflections of Arashiyama's mountains create a peaceful, picture-perfect view. A slow, mindful walk through the garden becomes an opportunity to disconnect from daily distractions and immerse oneself in nature.

The Imposing Cloud Dragon (Unryu-zu)
One of the temple's highlights is the Cloud Dragon painting on the ceiling of the Dharma Hall. This massive artwork depicts a dragon swirling through clouds, painted in such a way that its eyes seem to follow you from any angle.
While photography is not permitted, the sheer intensity of the dragon's gaze is unforgettable. This painting, created by artist Kayama Matazo in 1997, was designed to embody the power and protection associated with dragons in Zen Buddhism. The artist's masterful technique conveys the protective and watchful nature of the dragon, making visitors feel the spiritual power that Zen Buddhism attributes to this mythical creature.
